Red is a sensual color. It’s also a color many people associate with food. Today, for our divergent thinking and creativity exercise, we’re going to think about the color red. For this activity, set an alarm for five minutes and write down everything you can think of that is red. It doesn’t have to be always red or all red.
Don’t worry about the quality of the ideas, no one is going to see them but you. Just write them down as they come to you and stop when the alarm goes off. Set another alarm for one minute and just sit and let your brain recharge. When that alarm goes off restart the 1-minute alarm and continue your list.
Did you come up with 20 red things? 50 red things? 100?
As you progress are your ideas a little more creative? That’s the idea. Usually, your first few ideas are going to be a little more generic and the same kind of thing everyone else comes up with. The idea is to get you to make different and hopefully more-creative associations. This practice is great when you’re starting a new story, developing a new world or doing any other creative activity.
If you’re willing, share some of your favorite “red” things with us.
