With magazine articles, when you will get paid varies. You can get paid upon acceptance of the article, but the majority of magazines pay upon publication, which can be anywhere from 6 months to a year after accepting your article. Writer’s Market usually tells you whether they pay on acceptance or publication.

The amount also varies. You could be paid per article or per word. Some per word pay is as little as 5 cents per word or $1 a word. Magazines that pay 10 cents or less per word include “Columbus Parent Magazine” and “Camping Today”.  Magazines that pay $1 or more per word include “American Craft” and “Ms. Magazine”. Other magazines pay a flat rate. For instance, “Funny Times” pays at least $60 (for  500-700 words) and “Men’s Health” pays $1,000 to $5,000 for features (1200-4000 words) and $100-500 for short pieces (100-300 words).
