What is a Blog Tour and Where Does it Stop?

What is a blog tour and why do you need one?

I went to my local library today and donated my book. I inquired about doing a book signing, but the librarian said most don’t go well. People don’t show. You know why? People are busy and they’re connected to the internet, so they don’t need to go to the library.

When you launch your book you’re supposed to expose it, blasting it all over the world so it goes viral. Otherwise, people don’t know it’s out there. But how?

One way is to have a BLOG TOUR. What are they? They’re bloggers who host you and your book at their site. Some read your entire book and do reviews, sharing their honest opinions. Others do interviews. Still others include excerpts of your novel. I had to write 5 excerpts, 2 blog posts, 6 different interview Q and A’s, and at least a half a dozen book blurbs. After a while they all sound alike.

But just like you, all I want to do is go back to my writing.

Oksana, my 13-year-old Russian orphan, is calling to me. She’s my protagonist in my next novel, LOVE IS JUST A WORD. Her story is WAY different than Cache a Predator, but now that I’m an Indie Girl (self-publishing) I can publish whenever and whatever I want. But NOT before the book is ready. My editor says I’m 95% there, so I’m even more motivated to finish.

First, I must go ON TOUR with CACHE a PREDATOR. (That sounds so Hollywood, doesn’t it? Trust me, it’s not. I still have to take out the garbage, do the dishes, and I don’t get to travel.) The good thing is that I don’t have to put mascara on or curl my hair. I can stay home in my PJ’s or my sweats and eat what I want while I tour.

I took my friend and author Elena Dillon’s advice and hired BOOK PROMOTIONAL TOURS to manage my blog tour. They have various services that range from small to big with price tags to go with them, but I found their rates reasonable. I went with a middle-of-the road plan. Part of me wanted to handle my own blog tour because I tend to be a control freak, but I wasn’t sure how to manage the events. I’ve never had one before, and I wanted to get back to Oksana. So I contacted reviewers and interviewers on my own, but hired the tour company too.

Initially, I thought I’d learn how to orchestrate this tour and next time do it all myself, but I doubt that’s going to happen. It’s been too easy working with Jen and Tawdra at Book Promo Tours.

Giveaways  Most blog tours have incentives, giveaways. I’m giving away a $50 Amazon gift card and a signed copy of my book. You can personalize your tour your way. Elena gave out a beach bag along with her gift card and help her tour for a month. She had over 31,000 people enter her giveaway, and word has it her sales weren’t bad either!

Where does it stop? When you’re planning your blog tour for your book launch you want your book to stop at places readers like to visit, places where your readers hang out. Know your audience. Hang out at the places where your audience gathers.

If you’d like to follow my tour or host me at your blog I’d love to be invited. (Just as long as I don’t have to put on my make-up.)
