Kindle Countdown Deals–How Does it Work? Will it Grow Sales?

Amazon is often coming out with new book promotions for authors and publishers who agree to join Kindle SELECT. (If you’d like to learn more about the benefits of enrolling in KINDLE SELECT click HERE.) I chose to go with KDP Select because I thought it offered the best marketing plan options for me. And so far my sales have been great.

Amazon has done a great job helping me promote CACHE a PREDATOR, and now they’ve come out with something new. And exciting. It’s called KINDLE COUNTDOWN DEALS.

“Kindle Countdown Deals is a new KDP Select benefit that allows authors to run limited-time discount promotions on their books, which can help earn more royalties and reach more readers. Customers can see the regular price and the promotional price on the book’s detail page, as well as a countdown clock telling them how much time is left at the promotional price. You’ll also continue to earn your selected royalty rate on each sale during the promotion.”

This is how the COUNTDOWN works. Go to your Kindle Direct Publishing page that looks like this and click on your BOOKSHELF.

Then click on Manage Benefits at your BOOKSHELF. It’s explain all about the COUNTDOWN DEAL and how it works.

TO give you an example, this is how mine will go:

On BLACK Friday at 8:00 am CST, November 29, my book will be offered for $0.99 (75% discount). On Saturday, November 30, my book will be $1.99 (50% off), on December 1, the book will be $2.99 (25% off), and by December 2nd it’ll be back to the original price of $3.99.

Typically my profit is only 35% of anything under $2.99, but when I enroll in this program the profits are larger. Take a look.

Here are the benefits of Kindle Countdown Deals:

1) They’re time-based: Not only does this give you more control to decide how long the book is discounted, but the time remaining for the promotion is visible to customers to increase excitement for the price discount.

2) Customers see the regular price: It’s easy for customers to see the great deal they’re getting, as the regular price is included on the book’s detail page, right beside the promotional price.

3) Royalty rate is retained at lower prices: You will earn royalties based on your regular royalty rate and the promotional price. As a result, if you are using the 70% royalty option, you’ll earn 70% even if the price is below $2.99.

4) There’s a dedicated website: Customers can easily browse active; Kindle Countdown Deals at www.amazon.com/kindlecountdowndeals, providing yet another way for books to be discovered. (Guess whose book will be there? Yep. Mine!)

5) You can monitor performance in real-time: A new KDP report displays sales and royalties at each price discount side-by-side with pre-promotion performance, so it’s easy to compare.

I’ll let you know how the promo went and if it boosted my sales. But I’m hopeful and optimistic.

So, if you haven’t bought CACHE a PREDATOR yet, buy it HERE on BLACK Friday, November 29 for $0.99.

Read what some are saying about the book:

Cache a Predator isn’t a one-dimensional story of one man’s vendetta: it’s also about mystery and suspense wrapped up in the modern art of geocaching (thus the title)…that’s part of the allure of Cache a Predator, which uses this urban game to best advantage in the context of a urban mystery.” Midwest Review, D. Donavon

I highly recommend this book to any readers who are looking for a new, excellent crime novel that is heartrending and thought-provoking.”

“Weidenbenner weaves a masterful suspense thriller into a heartwarming story of sacrifice and love.”

“This book is like watching Criminal Minds or Law and Order.”

DOES KINDLE COUNTDOWN WORK? What are the results?

It’s almost 24 hours since my sale began. Here are a few screen shots of how effective it’s been. When the sale started, my novel was #88 in the mystery/suspense/thriller and crime category. Right now I’ve sold enough books that CACHE a PREDATOR is at #10 on the bestseller list in the mystery/thriller/crime category.

YES, it works. Thank you AMAZON for offering this cool countdown deal! My novel is getting noticed.

  1. Hey there! 🙂

I’ve planned a countdown promo for the week of Cyber Monday (Dec. 2-5) for both of my books. (www.amazon.com/author/oliverdahl). I’ve been trying to find someone to get some numbers from who have done it already. Would you let me know how yours goes when it’s done? We can trade data and whatever afterwards. Anyway, I’m just interested to know and hear of other authors’ experiences with these new countdown deals.

Also, let me know what places you went to promote your book for this deal–it seems to be doing extremely well right now! I’m also looking for places beside the usual to link to my book on.
    Thanks!
    Oliver

    • Hi Oliver –
Sure, I’ll be happy to let you know. Here’s something I’ve already learned. I had my “deal” scheduled for 8:00 am today, but I missed that it was at 8:00 PST–which is 11:00 am EST, or my time. Ugh! It wouldn’t be a big deal except that I’d advertised it as several places and they informed me that they couldn’t put it in the newsletter because it wasn’t on sale at the time they were going to print it.
I’ve heard that it’s important to advertise your “days” so others know about it. I boosted my FB ad so we’ll see if it helps. I’ll give you updates, okay?
Thanks for asking and good luck with your sale. I’ll be sure to help SHOUT about your days too.

      Best,
      Michelle

        Hi Michelle

Are there any updates on your Kindle Countdown Deal? I am about to do one myself and am looking for ideas of where to promote it.

I don’t want to pay for a BookBub deal as I’m only starting out as an author.

        All the best!

        • Hi Erin –
I do a Kindle Countdown Deal every 90 days on each of my novels. It breathes life back into them. If you earn 70% of your profit you will more than pay for your BOOKBUB ad, the success rate is typically amazing, but i know the initial cost is steep. The problem is that it’s difficult to get an accepted ad with them. (I have one this week though. Yay!) Here are a few others you can try: Book Viral, Book Sends, Book Daily, People Reads, Bargain Booksy, Pixel Scroll, eReader News Today. You can read this post to see connect to the links quickly: http://randomwritingrants.com/2013/09/10/how-i-made-amazons-best-seller-list-and-you-can-too/
Good luck! I hope you sell a lot of books.
          Michelle
